Saving from Family
Tree Maker program into a GEDCOM file
When you used Family Tree Maker did you
use what is referred to as a GEDCOM file? If that is the case then all you
have to do is send me the same file
and I should be able to upload it onto the GenCircles database. You can
also export it to Gencircles yourself if you want it .
Below
are the instructions on how do I export your data from Family Tree Maker to a
GEDCOM file:
1. Open the file you'd like to export to GEDCOM in Family Tree
Maker.
2. Select Copy/Export Family File... from the File menu.
3. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Save as type text.
Select GEDCOM *.GED from the list.
4. Decide on a location to store your GEDCOM file so that you
can easily retrieve it again. A reasonable place to store your file might be
your Desktop or My Documents. You can access these by clicking on box next to
Save in and scrolling all the way to the top. You will find both the Desktop and
My Documents in that list.
5. Type a file name next to where it says File name. An
example file name would be MyData.ged
6. Click Save and a new window will pop-up.
7. Make sure that:
* Destination is set to
FTM
* GEDCOM is set to
Version 5.5
* Character Set is set to
ANSI
8. Make sure Indent records is NOT checked.
9. Make sure Abbreviate tags is checked.
10. Click OK.
11. Your file has now been exported and is ready to be emailed
to me or submitted to GenCircles.
As for the various lineages of the family the GenCircles database has the
ability to section out the surnames one wants to refer to. The really
great thing about this database, it allows cross referencing to other records
with the same surnames. They call it SmartMatching. Our
aim is to link or connect clan members from all over the world. David
